Bleach - 101 - Mayuri vs. Sawatari/Baura

Although I wasn’t pleased with this particular fight/episode, I’m still relatively satisfied with how this Bleach filler arc is progressing. We get to see most of the captains in action (even if the fights are lame) and the overall suspense of the situation is still high. Each episode has a goal and a purpose, which keeps my attention WAY better than the damn Naruto fillers which seem to be all over the place. This episode’s feature: Captain Mayuri vs. Bounto Sawatari(and Baura).
Okay, this fight was some weak shit. There was little to no confrontation, and pretty much every single blow made by Mayuri connected and damaged Sawatari/Baura and vise versa. I was kind of bored but I still thought some parts were pretty cool and entertaining. For one, I actually like Mayuri and his sadistic type approach to his fights (trying to keep them alive as long as possible…aka torture), but I’ll side with Danny on this one and say he fucking sucked this episode. They could have done a lot with this fight and really demonstrated some skill from both participants, but it seriously lacked depth. There was little to no struggle for either of the characters and the death was quick and relatively painless. I’m disappointed.
I didn’t notice any lack of quality in terms of sound or art so that’s good, but it seems that the writers are struggling to maintain a high level of quality when animating the fight scenes. You can’t really sacrifice the quality of the fight and expect us to enjoy it, even if the artwork is great. They better be on their game when Kariya fights.
One thing I’ve noticed, that has been a big problem for me, is the fact that Bounto typically use their dolls to fight. I feel like I’m watching Bleachemon or something because the Bounto themselves practically do nothing while they watch their dolls handle everything. The big exception being Kariya and his tendencies to use the wind as a sword and going close combat (and Yoshi but she sucks anyway). I have a feeling that “Sailor Ishida” vs. Yoshi is going to be a failure of a fight, just like this one. You can’t really top Ishida vs. Mayuri back in the days. The novelty of his super Quincy form and awesome power that he seemed to posses gave me goose bumps, but now it’s just like whatever just shoot him already and win, you can’t use your superpower anyway. They really ruined Ishida’s potential (along with many other characters but that topic is for another time) when they killed his powers. I feel like it was an unnecessary plot device that turned him into a whining pansy who has now magically revived his powers BUT omg there’s a twist, he might explode…*rolls eyes* This fight, his chain will probably break and he’ll no longer have Quincy powers again.
I will pray that they don’t mess up the ending as it seems it’s drawing near. I’m also hoping this means an end to the fillers and progression of the manga storyline. Fuck Naruto for being a bitch and having over a year of shitty fillers. Bleach at least has had an interesting story to give us, but still, makeshift fillers can’t surpass the quality of a manga story. Lets leave this filler arc with a BANG!

Ishida was never meant to get his powers back until the manga…I wonder if they’ll have him lose it again and regain it when the fillers end, or just leave it as it is and skip the manga part. Anyway yeh, the fight was pretty crap. I totally agree with you on the doll part. It’s practically like Ichigo and co. fighting nothing but Hollows all day, and that’s downright boring. As for your question to why Mayuri’s bankai wasn’t being swallowed by Baura, I suspect it’s because his head was too big.

Captain Mayuri isn’t my favourite Captain at all, he is meant to be the Orochimaru-esque type in Bleach…but he just doesn’t have the real eerie and spooky aura required. But I guess he is meant to be presented as being a formidable foe.
Even though fillers will be fillers (canonical crap), its good to see that Bleach is breaking out from filler hell to resume the manga works. Unlike some other shounen anime, and by that I mean Naruto of course.
There’s a lot of things that could have been done to Mayuri to make him 100x cooler but they didn’t. That’s one thing I think people hate so much about him; he’s an incomplete character. Now, if I had written him into the story here’s some things I would have changed:
