Code Geass - Great Ass or Gay Ass?

Good Afternoon folks, I wish to happily congratulate any Aussies that frequent this blog, for the completion of both High School and Tertiary exams (Party Hard!). So the main dish for today is “Code GreatAss” or as the 4chan hivemind calls it, “Code GayAss”. So which is it? Well, join me as I do a 6 episode wrapup of characters that truly deliver, and characters that are likely to be used as story/plotline sacrificial lambs. Though, I think most would find this Sunrise and CLAMP alliance has “Delivered” thus far (more on the Pizza Hut pun later).
In Soviet Japan, Arrows Draw You.
In the first few episodes we are told that Great Britain is getting IMPERIAL on everyone’s ass. When I say imperial, I mean Star Wars - Empire Imperial, Nazi - Blitzkrieg Imperial etc. Basically, they are claiming some serious territory for the motherland. According to that map above, they have taken over all of Europe, North America and South America. Actually, it seems all the world is now wearing monocles and enjoying a cuppa in the afternoon. Japan, who doesn’t like Earl Greys, decide to ask the Brits to kindly sod off. But unfortunately, Godzilla, Gundams, Super Saiyans and Magical Girls could not spare them from getting schooled. Code GreatAss is based in a Britain-Oppressed Japan, and how one boy (Lelouch) intends to restore Japan to its former glory. There are two other major superpowers, that is the EEU (European Union) and Chinese Federation, who probrably need to marshall their forces and strike back before everything is having afternoon tea (Thanks Czarina).
“The Hero”
This is Lelouch. He’s your typical Sunrise Hero, Raven-Haired, has Big ambitions (I’d say crushing a Global superpower is pretty damned big), Has all the other female leads wanting inside his pants and a badass-cool attitude. Check and Check right? Wrong. Lelouch is unique, he doesn’t have a Gundam or a Powersuit. He has got the “Geass” (Pronounced “Gay-Ass”. If you are a bird-lover, then go with “Geese”). More on that later. As a lead, Lelouch has a mask of mystery behind him (both literally and metaphorically). Though he has made his main intentions known, we can’t really feel satisfied that he has divulged his motives to us. Lelouch is intriguing, and leaves us wanting more at the end of every episode. He has two personas, Lelouch the normal high school kid, and Zero, the Terrorist seeking to DESTROY Brittania. But, he shouts like a girl (See: Episode 6). I am sure other bloggers would have nicknamed him “Squeak-tan” or “Lulu-chan” or something by now. So for Lelouch, he delivers thus far, and I am sure he is going to get a lot of character development.
“The Gay-Ass”
This is the Geass, a V-shaped mind control power that comes out from Lelouch’s eye. Basically it can mind control anyone, conditions are that you must look into a person’s eye directly. Also, you can only use the power once on a person, after that, it has no effect on the person. Think of it like a limited usage Jedi Mind Trick, except with cool shit beaming out from your eye and crazy 3-D CGI cutscenes to represent your mental domination. Yuri from Red Alert 2 would be proud. It’s the Hero’s main power, so prepare to see it a lot; At least once or twice each episode. Also worthy to note, is that it leaves the mind controlled person with a jumbled up memory, as the attack strikes to cerebrum or something. Mind Bullets are Serious Business.
“The Best Friend”
Private Kururugi Suzaku is an Honoured Britannian, a rank given to Japanese who have devoted themselves to the service of the Empire (higher citizens than “Elevens”, which are non-honoured brits, or regular japs). In the past episode Suzaku saved Lelouch and girl with a Great-Ass called CC from a certain SWAT owning. Accused of a Murder in an earlier episode, he is later acquitted for lack of evidence. Suzaku is Lelouch’s childhood friend, and are reunited for good when he enrolls in Lelouch’s school. Suzaku is a very easy character to warm up to, he is a character with a high moral integrity and one of those “Pure” types. Lelouch frequently calls him an idiot due to his selfless nature. In a sense, Suzaku shares the male lead spot with Lelouch, and he fills the typical Sunrise Hero, as he pilots a special Prototype Mech called the “Lancelot”. I enjoy watching Suzaku’s warm nature and makes for an interesting duo with a more self-absorbed Lelouch. He is the character most likely to stick with Lelouch’s rebellion until the very end, and accept Lelouch’s terrorist persona, Zero as a means of freeing the Japanese people from oppression. Great character development potential and a charm to watch.
“The Great-Ass Babe”
I found the reason why the anime is affectionately called “Great-Ass”, and its because of this lady, CC. CC is gorgeously CLAMP in design, but seems that her ASSets have also been given a boost. I don’t know who her VA is, but like, her voice is very sexy and matches her character. The origins of CC are as follows; She came from a huge mettalic ball and was the one to give Lelouch his Gay-Ass powers (yeah, I went there). It was apparently a contract, but there was no kiss or handshake to seal the contract, but there was some shiny CGI shit whizzing around, that must the new rage these days in sealing contracts. So aside from having a nice ass, CC has a huge thing for Pizza Hut pizzas, she can’t seem to get enough of that crap. I know it’s obvious product placement, but her character literally eats pizza as if its the only thing her body will take. CC’s character is carefree, Hungry, sensuous and extremely liberal. She literally undresses and sleeps in Lelouch’s bed naked (exposing us to more of that Great Ass), Lelouch has to sleep on the floor though. I love watching CC, and not just because she likes Pizza.
“The Great-Rack Babe”
Code Geass’s character design must be all about delivering the most eye candy characters to grace a Sunrise anime. This is Karen Staddfelt, a Brittanian with Japanese Blood. On the outside, she is Karen, the softspoken high school student, and like Lelouch has another personality as a Japanese Resistance Fighter. In addition to having CC’s fine bottom, she’s also well-endowed. With distractions like Karen and CC, I wonder how I actually pay attention to the storyline. This anime does not divulge us with any fanservice, just stupidly sexy character designs (Hell, even people are turning GAR for Suzaku and Lelouch). Karen is also a capable mech fighter pilot and her combat outfit looks pretty rad (though it reminds me of a 1990’s street rapper’s getup). Karen has been Gay-Assed once by Lelouch. As a character, Karen’s visually stunning and her character is High-Spirited with a strong sense of Justice. If CC was the Yin of Geass, then Karen is the Yang. You can’t help but whistle everytime Karen pops up though. In case you are wondering, yes she really does answer a phone whilst taking a shower (Source is Episode 3, Go now, and feast your eyes on true beauty).
“The Blind and Disabled Loli”
This is Nanali, Lelouch’s infinitely adorable little sister. She is blind and unable to walk due to an attack launched against her mother (Thanks Eurys). Also possibly one of those lolis which are completely sacred and innocent. She’s a living representation of “See No Evil” (literally). Deep inside, I fear for Nanali, I mean if I was a Supervillain and knew that the Hero had this helpless, adorable sister who could not defend herself from a housefly, it would be like a stupidly obvious Jackpot Kidnap opportunity. There’s also the problem that Lelouch simply adores Nanali, and makes a promise with her to change the world for her to enjoy. So she’s Lelouch’s only true weakness, as opposed to anything the council members were trying to find in Episode Six. Nanali also knows her brother inside out and has a close affinity with Suzaku. Nanali is kind of the adorable little sister everyone wishes for, but also the character most likely to be Kidnapped / Tortured for Information and subject to a tragic death. Lets pray that she comes out Awwright by the end of the season.
“The Princess”
This is Princess Euphemia, she currently holds power in Area Eleven (Japan). She’s the type most likely to totally fall in love with Suzaku. In fact, all of Episode 5 was developing their coupling. No doubt she will also get Kidnapped or Abducted in order to lure Suzaku out for some twisted and dark conspiracy against the Empire. Her character is your typical affluent, yet strong types, she does not impress me at all though. If you want a real combat princess type, I recommend 2nd Lt. Alice from Pumpkin Scissors, now that’s an Inspirational Noble (plus she has an official military rank, that just kicks ass). Euphemia is more of the plot fodder types, moreso than Nanali.
“The Up to No Good Guyz”
From the moment you see Jeremiah and Violetta, you knew they were as good as Satan Riding a Hellfire Dragon. Jeremiah’s been Gay-Assed by Lelouch, who used him to allow Suzaku to escape from execution. To make matters worse for Jeremiah, Zero (Lelouch’s codename) called him “Orange”. A madeup codename to smear his name further and land Jeremiah in suspicion of collaborating with terrorists. As a result, he has been imprisoned and dropped three ranks. He now has a grudge against Zero and the current Brittainian council who imprisoned him. He is the type most likely to form some kind of radical third faction which opposes both Japs and the current Brit administration. Don’t the pair remind you of Jesse and James from Team Rocket? I am expecting a lot of twisted conspiracies involving these two, as they are going to be crucial in driving the plot along.
“The Crazy Hair Man”
THis is the 86th Emperor of Britain. I call him Crazy Hair Man because that head of hair looks like a Intergalactic Starport, with Spaceships docking on it and lifeforms trading on it, its just ridiculous huge and overbearing. He was designed to be visually intidimating, looking like THE HULK as opposed to a normal human being, well he IS the supreme ruler of the whole Brittanian Empire, so I guess he has to look the part. He also happens to be Lelouch’s father, I am glad Lelouch did not inherit his dad’s stupidly large hair crap. At the end of episode 6, he made a pretty impressive speech, I think kind of in the spirit of what Winston Churchill would have said during World War II. Winston Churchill is Jawsome, but Crazy Hair Man is just another so called “So close, yet so far” character-objective for Lelouch to reach. He is the character that is most likely to have his own Mech (which will be like Two Dragon Gundams fused together with some Ghost Dragon Pokemon or some shit) and also the character to die the most spectacular death (either going UAAAHHHH!!!!! or GLORY TO BRITTANIA!!!!!).
SUPPORT THE PIZZA HUT REBELLION!
If you ignore the delicious CC on the bed, you will see the joke of Code Great-Ass. Yes, its Pizza Hut. I am not sure if it is friendly product placement or a joke referencing globalization. If it is product placement (I am sure its this one), then Pizza Hut must be shelling craploads of money, as in EVERY episode so far, Pizza Hut makes an appearance. This gratuitious amount of Pizza Hut exposure is forgivable, since most of the time, CC is deliciously enjoying it, and because I like CC, I dont mind it as much. But I can imagine the pain of a Dominoes fan watching this and cursing Pizza Hut to high hell. But its obvious that the Rebellion is fuelled by Pizza Hut, and that in the future where we are crapping each other with Gundams and Mechs, Pizza Hut will be there to feed our hungry Mech Pilots. I am still trying to figure out what CC’s favourite topping is, all I know is that she loves the extra cheese and what looks like Salami. In episode 6, they make a reference to collecting points. Maybe CC is working towards winning one of those cool points-prizes like a Pizza Hut Rebellion Gundam (Start your very own Rebellion today! Simply order two large pizzas for your first sticker and sticker sheet! Conditions Apply.).
A Distressed Nanali can make anyone a SAD PANDA.

You really need to watch Mai-HiME if you think this has the most eye candy characters (at least females, I don’t give a damn about males being eye candy or not).:) But then again I don’t really like the Code Geass character design. Or the characters themsleves, none of them has really made me care much what will happen to him or her.

And also utterly and completely boring, if you ask me, at least Nanami has been boring thus far. Suzaku is a freaking Kira Yamato clone but probably even more clueless. How come this series is created by the people responsible for Planetes and yet the cast bores so much? Maybe I am simply prejudiced to mechas but I am really trying to like this show and is just not working. Only Cornellia is cool but she is not that great (yet).

“combat princess” - Now that’s a great phrase, and yeah, Alice does make a better combat princess. Every time I see Lelouch, I keep thinking he’s a Roswell Gray wearing a skin suit. For me CC, Karen, and Suzaku give the show its personality. I could really go for some pizza right now. To bad Pizza Hut moved out of town.
@Matrim: I’ve watched both Hime and Otome, and yeah Definitely can see where you are coming from there.
(If the designs aren’t gratitutious eye candy, I don’t know what is). Also, Nanali is going to be kidnapped imo, so maybe she’ll be a plot device later on. Suzaku and Light (kira) do share some traits, but Suzaku doesn’t seem to be killing off bad guys by the mass (so maybe he is slightly more of a good guy), plus we can be *somewhat* thankful he doesnt have a death god following him (always a good sign of not being a complete clone). Brittania has taken over the world [According to the Intro ep and that map], and Japan was the last place to fall under His Majesty’s Iron Fist.
@badger11: My favourite characters will probrably be Karen and CC. Great Asses all around, and Pizza Hut will also be my favourite “multinational Pizza company that has taken over the world”. My God, you may have stumbled across a conspiracy…an Alien in a Lulu Suit!!! Well, maybe they have a thing against crazy world-ruling Brits.
Britania is just the biggest country/empire in this anime. Yet there are also 2 other powers: The Chinese Federation (Communist/equal wealth based) and the European League/Union (Parliament/Equal right based).
I also believe that Pizza hurts gives financial support (or gave it) to Code Geass. Episode 8 was the only episode without any Pizza Hut advertizing and it is the episode in which they actually pulled a lot of repeated frames.
PS. As much as I like CC and Karen, I prefer the yuri style of Millay and the inocent looking Shirley.
@Czar: Cheers for that, I was under the impression that Japan was the last to fall to Brittanian Rule (I’ll go fix it). But strikes me strange that neither the EEU or Chinese Federation is doing anything about this world domination thing they are pulling. Episode 08 is a flashback episode? Sigh….Its a bit early for that is it not?

@Dark: Nah, Epidose 8 was a full action based episode. They really pulled to the limit their budget on this one since we saw the best and worst scenes and drawings of the whole series soo far.
Next week episode is going to be called EP. 8.5 so it won’t be counted as an official episode or included in the DVD.

I have to agree, because so far, the design appeals to me more so than any other series this season. I’m a sucker for CLAMPesque (Yuuko from xxx set me off).

1. suzaku- that it really, he get into binds and situations where he should lose or die but ALWAYS get’s saved by SOMEONE… ALWAYS, there is ALWAYS someone to save his ass or some situation that protects him just BECUASE…. and it pisses me off- also that purity that you where getting warm to? it’s not that pure…. actually it’s kinda pathetic when you find the “why” of it
2. except for clovis, NO-ONE ACTUALLY SEEMS TO DIE IMMEDIATLY FROM HANDGUN BULLETS- in fact there is a villain-esque charecter that get’s unloaded on BY AN ENTIRE BATTALION OF POLICE and LIVES, hell he shows up in the NEXT FUCKING EPISODE. there are other situations where something similar happens but I don’t wanna ruin it for people who havent seen it
3. for some strange reason the makers of this anime decided to break luluch, mentally- all events seem to lead to this inevitable conclusion and considering there is going to be an entire second season of this show I honestly can’t see where they are going with it… watching a show about a complete nut job doesnt sound particularly interesting to me
4. the season ending a a cliffhanger of epic preportions- you have no idea, and it PISSES ME OFF, because now i’m probably going to have to wait till mid november to find out what happens

I don’t see what is that innevitable conclusion you talk: I think the show will switch it’s plot from “the fight to free Japan” to “what the hell is C.C. and V.V. and Geass?”

I agree with this. They did end the first season in a very unfair way. “Oh look, there is no end, but don’t worry: the second season is already in production!” :-/

BTW: That Princess is another Lacus Clyne duo, jeez these directors need to get some better tastes, CC and Karen I donIt mind. But Euphemia is just another one of those naive bitches that get pwned later on. Thank God Lelouch shot her dead, then of course Suzaku goes on a rampage and chaos ensues. What a nice ending to Season 1.
At least for season 2, the Euphinator has been killed (nicknamed Genocide-tan on forums) and Suzaku has been upgraded to Shinn.

it had me interested in everything, i liked the history, the girls…. mmmm where to start… cant decide on karen or the blonde college president girl (forgot her name cant forget the looks)
BTW if you can search for the special chapters (dunno any decent torrent will do) cuz theres a special with shirley, karen, the hot blonde and the stupid nerd, naked in a bath… AND THATS ALL ABOUT IT… they end up gettin naughty on someone
but what made me a hater IS THE DAMN FINALE….
I SPENT LIKE 2 FULL FREACKIN DAYS LOOKING FOR ANOTHER CHAPTER, usually the series are made of 24 chapters, this had 25, so I said, well there must be soething else… BUT NO… UNTIL SEPTEMBER OR SOMETHING…
SO MY ADVICE:
when u get to the chapter after the noncombat princess (lol at the term) does her biggest show on the series… TURN IT OFF AND THROW IT AWAY… DONT WATCH IT FURTHER OR ULL REGRET IT…
if u leave the ending THERE and then when it comes out in some months see the final chapter u will be happier… trust me, I would if i could
but now… I HATE CLAMP

The Pizza Hut advertising is because they’re sponsoring the show so it does not lose quality from issues like budget. The show maintains a very high standard of quality, pizza hut gets to sell more pizzas and people get to eat. Everyone wins.
Pizza Hut ran a promotion where their medium pizza boxes had code geass box-art, downloadable wallpaper and competition entry for 20 people to win a pizza box and a script — both of which are signed by Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch), Yukana (C.C.), Takahiro Sakurai (Suzaku Kururugi), or Takahiro Mizushima (Rollo).
Apparently, the american dub has removed anything to do with pizza hut from the anime.
Spinzaku is the gayest character ever.

They ERASED the Pizza Hut labels whenever it appears! This turns the pizza into a regular, cartoon-like, generical package, which I find absolutely hilarious. You DO know that Pizza Hut is one of the show’s sponsers, right? Probably how they can get away with this. Pizza Hut is known throughout the world, but the legal reasoning is understandable.
CLAMPs designs are beautiful, but they distract me from what’s going on sometimes. So far, it’s a very entertaining show.
And may I add that: have you SEEN Lelouch in his red jacket?! He’s STUNNING! He makes a straight guy swoon!
