It’s the later half of the university semester (assessments and more group projects), which means that I will have to drop my current coverage of Ikkiboobsen unfortunately, however in my recent coverage of the series, I enjoyed it immensely and I definitely recommend it to those who have not watched it already (if fanservice is your alley). I’d also like to take this opportunity to say that Retsgip has gotten a job recently, but he will be trying his best to write an entry when he can. That aside, how about that flashy new Evangelion Promotion Poster huh? I saw it and went, “There could be clues hidden within this visual aid”, clues which could enlighten us on what to expect on the First Evangelion movie remake coming out on September 1st (Entitled: You are not alone). Actually, I am alone at the moment, but I won’t be if you join me in some Angel-bashing and Eva-piloting.

A Poster is Fine too and a Thank You, EvaMonkey Forums
Those of you who have read or seen my entry on Anno’s press release would have savvy’d that I was not very enthused about the whole, “Lets totally K-O the whole industry!”. There needs to be realization that its all part of Anno’s plan, sensationalizing and generating hype is all part of Gainax’s game. That, and sapping my daily living expenses because I have to go out and purchase the latest Gold-plated, Platinum Edition Rei statue to display on my Reiquarium (Limited Edition with Signature from God himself, of course). However, this new poster is interesting to say the least, and together, let us all try and play Master Detective in trying just what in the living name of Spaghetti Monster is Anno and friends conjuring for Eva fans.
For those of you wondering just what I’m planning to analyze on the poster, its all the Japanese words and shit on the side of the picture. As most of the regulars have gathered, I could probrably do a triple somersault whilst eating a chilli dog better than I can actually trying to understand or read Japanese. I’d also like to point out that doing a triple somersault whilst eating a chilli dog is actually fucking awesome, but I can’t do it to save my life. So what I needed was like, a Translation for this whole thing and our fellow Evangelion fans over at “EvaMonkey” forums have provided a Bananalicious translation for us to analyze, mock and give ridiculous blank stares. Also, the guy on the forums who provided the translation has Piccolo as his avatar, we can always trust Nameks…err Namek-Eva-Monkeys. That and they have Ayanami as their forum banner (I swear that had nothing to do with choosing them).

The Poster itself
Before we tackle every single thing at the side of the poster (and there is a metric shit-tonne), lets look at the actual poster at an aesthetic level. We can see all the familiar faces, ZOMG TEH REI!!! (of course she would be mentioned first), Kensuke Aida, Emofag Shinji, Touji and Hikari the Class Rep. Yeap, everything looks okay here. Lets keep in mind that this is the first movie, which is based around episodes one through six I am assuming. We can also see Kaworu standing there, looking kinda cool. WAIT WHAT!? Kaworu? Let me get this straight, they are introducing Kaworu first as opposed to Asuka as opposed to Asuka first Then Kaworu a’la the first series?. Being a Rei fanboy, I am fine with this, but I imagine that Asuka fans are already charging their Jesuscannons at Gainax for this ommission. Otherwise I am very pleased to see Touji and Hikari in there, they are likable and important semi-primary characters.
The character designs still look Sadamotolicious, which is working as intended. I am definitely interested in seeing how they will Kaworu into the whole scheme of things so early in the plot. I am guessing Anno wishes for the moment in which Shinji has to “Expire” Kaworu’s life to be a lot more dramatic and tragic, seeing as he would be associated with Shinji and Superfriends a lot earlier compared with the original. Seriously speaking, who knows? Kaworu is an angel and he could just be dropping by Earth to have some Sushi or just to roll with his homies (its what Angels do when they get free time from killing Satan’s demons and stuff, I read it somewhere in a magazine), so basically he does whatever the hell he wants to, like appearing in a major movie remake before an iconic female lead.
Exciting Staircase is Exciting. That is if, you define watching Slow-motion Golf exciting and thrilling, I will admit that the setting for the screenshot isn’t very eventful. However, as Eva fans we don’t really give a crap about the staircase (no matter how badly damaged it looks), the first thing we do is see whether our favourite character is in it. Aside from our favourite characters and a derelict staircase, the view outside is relatively dull, with a couple of electrical towers and hills which look like they smoke clouds. I know the more artistic amongst us will interpret this as a “Foreshadowing” of dark and gloomy tones of the anime, which would be dead right. Also notice that Rei and Shinji aren’t smiling, Rei’s not smiling because she doesn’t have to, she’s photogenic whether she does it or not (rofl fanboy is showing), and Shinji’s not smiling either, which is also about right (at least he isn’t crying).
Oh and before we dive into the side-text, the massive words going down the top middle right to the tip of Shinji’s head just says “EVANGELION New Theatrical Feature: PREFACE “.

Aight guys, lets do this the logical way, from Top to Bottom.
SHINJI: “….. I have nothing worth protecting”
Shinji’s statement on what he has to protect is very much in lieu with his character. As the anti-hero, its common knowledge that he is inward thinking and rather indecisive when having to take the actions which matter. Don’t give me the, “He is only 14 years old crap”, even if you were 14 and saw someone important to you in grave danger or needing help, you’d do it in a heartbeat, its part of being a human being. He very much has the things worth protecting, starting with his friends (Kensuke, Touji and Hikari) and he obviously has Rei, Asuka and the NERV personnel who all look out for him too. Of course neither Rei nor Asuka need protection in that sense, but in terms of saving someone, it would be a given. Shinji thinks of saving another in terms of what is in it for him (not financially speaking, but for his ego), this can be contrasted to a more selfless Ichigo-Shounen hero type, who would do the unaskable regardless. No surprises here.
“The FOURTH ANGEL”
I see Satchiel’s getting no love, Third Angel Satchiel is as iconic as Godzilla series wise as the first uber bad guy (or Angel as we call them in Eva) to stomp over Tokyo 3. I was eagerly awaiting this guy’s badass reappearance to knock some sense into whimpy Shinji, but I guess the work has to be done by Shamshel the Fourth Angel. I am not a big fan of Shamshel because it looks like a massive penis with two lazer tentacles coming out of it.
“A.T. FIELD”
Good to see the Protoss Shields of the Evangeverse returns to protect Aliens and Eva units alike. SHIELDS TO MAXIMUM!!!
“Private Organization Under the Direct Supervision of the UNITED NATIONS, Special Agency NERV”
As expected, the organization run by Ikari Gendou, NERV will make a sparkling return into our lives, as the white-gloved maniac plots to become God himself before our very eyes. We should, however be very careful, because the UNITED NATIONS is watching the organization very closely, who knows what Koffi Annan will do to our heroes! I am sure we all know that the supreme legislation of the united nations will cripple even the greatest of Alien invaders!
“STRATEGIC OPERATIONS Section, TACTICAL DEPARTMENT Division 1, Section Chief, LT. COL. MISATO KATSURAGI”
Awww yeahh!!! Misato’s back to guide the next generation of young males through puberty, and I would not have it any other way. I see that our good Major has gotten another Promotion in the Ten Years we have not seen her, to Liutenant Colonel (/salute). Old fans will remember that she was formerly Captain, then promoted to Major until the end of the last series. For the Stargate SG-1 fans amongst us, lets just say Misato pulled a Samantha Carter on us. Now, if only she would share her secret recipe.
“Surface-to-Surface INTERCEPTION SYSTEM Operating at 7.5%”
What the shit? 7.5%? Thats not even trying at all. I mean seriously, we are going to get totally raped if an Alien Battlecruiser warps out of subspace into our planet. An “INTERCEPTION” system operating at 7.5% may as well be a Combat Frog with a toothpick hung around its head, and even then the Battle Toad would do like 5000 times more damage.
“MARDUK REPORT”
Report on the kids born during the second impact and whatnot, all whom are prime candidates for Synchro-rates in Eva units. They are termed as First - Nine Thousandth “Children” etc. Please note that the Nine Thousand and First Children is likely to break all power-measurement devices. Don’t worry the mix up between “Child” and “Children” is working as intended.
“The THIRD BOY, SHINJI IKARI”
Yes we saw him in the poster, we know. Thanks, lets move on now.
“All-Purpose HUMANOID DECISIVE WEAPON, Artificial Human EVANGELION TEST TYPE-01″
Purple Veangance once again strides Tokyo Three, with Motherly Wrath and Crazy emo kid to boot. It’s been too long, old friend. Eva 01 is not so much an Eva unit, so much as it a Main character in the series, we all love it when he goes Berserk and tears the living crap out of Angels and also how he looks completely nightmare inducing when his Purple armour is taken out. Also, you will not see a more manly Purple combat mech. That and he has a Horn! if you are a fan of magical unicorns, you can imagine Eva 01 as an amazing Purple Unicorn Robot (Awwww).
“TECHNOLOGICAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Section, Technology Department Division One, Managing Director of PROJECT E, DR. RITSUKO AKAGI”
Maya Ibuki’s sexual fantasy, everybody’s favourite mother-complex genius and the key behind the three supercomputers of the NERV Hivemind, Riiiitsuukoo Akaaagi! When the three wise men, Caspar (the friendly ghost), Melchior and Balthasar rode the desert following the north star to greet Baby Jesus, they sure bumped into Ritsuko’s mum first. Her title remains the same from the original, its still really longwinded and super-important, as it should be. I just hope she doesn’t kill all my Reis in the Reiquarium this time.
L-01 TYPE Interconversion System CORE UNIT
I am guessing this is the Pilot Pod which they inject into the Eva unit before injecting Orange Fanta into it. We can all agree that its at least pretty important sounding, judging by the word “CORE”. If you have watched the movie, “The Core”, you would know that when Cores screw up, we are all in for the shitter. Lets hope this one stays stable or something.
“RED CROSS OF LIGHT “
Is this some Marketing stunt by the Red Cross blood service? I certainly hope so, did you know that by donating blood you could potentially save three lives (fact by the way), so ring up your local Red Cross centre today and see if you can contribute.
“HUMAN INSTRUMENTALITY PROJECT, 27th Interim Report”
Zzzzzzzzzzz. Even the Executive Summary on this one sounds immensely boring. Basically, its the thing which ultimately gets executed as The Third Impact (whereby humanity’s AT Field deteriorates and we all rush to Rei’s massive naked body in space) by SEELE (Creepy old men with lazer glasses), and our fate is decided by God’s representative for the evening (Shinji). Yeah, totally not exciting report there.
“SECOND IMPACT”
Caused by the sealing of Adam, the first angel. It eventually caused a massive explosion which killed Billions and owned Antartica. Don’t worry Penguins survive the explosions, because they have a secret undergound alien battle-fortress for when mankind is extinct, and in which time, Penguins will rule the face of the Earth along with their bastard comrades-in-crime, Dolphins. The First Impact is the one which killed the Dinosaurs.
“Fortified City for ANGEL Interception, TOKYO-3″
They aren’t joking or exaggerating here. Buildings in Tokyo 3 are literally Eva unit launch pads, weapon cases and ammo caches for our budding heroes. Despite high standards of living and ridiculously hot weather all year round (Thanks a lot, second impact fags), there is also the threat of massive Angels destroying your home, and stealing your beer (think of the beer).
“HEDGEHOG’S DILEMMA”
An episode title from the original series. Basically the Dilemma is, the closer a Hedgehog tries to get to another Hedgehog, the more pain it will inflict to its partner. If it sounds emo to you, then you are on the right track. There’s obviously a human element to the dilemma, as people repel one another to ensure both the wellbeing of their feelings and the other.
“DEFENSE SYSTEM 48.6% Completed”
C’mon UNITED NATIONS! Pick up your game! I know this is an improvement over the INTERCEPTION system operating at only 7.5% (we’re fucked), but 48.6% is still fail. Say I am feeling generous and I round that up, its still only 49%, and it STILL fails. I guess its up to 14 year olds to save the lives of an entire planet then (No pressure whatsoever). Thanks a lot UN.
“UMBILICAL CABLE Disconnected”
The U-Cable is the Lifeline of Evas (no pun intended), think of it as an adapter for a ten storey humanoid mech-interface. It will provide unlimited energy for the Eva unit, and open disconnection, the Eva unit can only last five or so minutes on battery power (and I complain about my Toshiba laptop sometimes). In this case, the Umbilical Cable is Disconnected, which probrably isn’t a good thing for us.
“RAIN OF BLOOD”
Is it that time of the month already?
“CHILDREN OF PREORDAINED FATE”
Basically referring to the children int the Marduk report. Its stating that those kids who are chosen have a set destiny of skipping school to pilot massive robots in order to save the world. I’d rather go to school because they have 45 minute - 1 hour lunch breaks. You can’t exactly park your ten storey robot and ask the angel to stop destroying humanity for a lunch break now can you?
“The FIRST GIRL, REI AYANAMI”
Teh Rei needs no Introduction. I don’t need to say anything about Rei, She is Essence, Crucial to what Evangelion is. Whatever you have heard about ZOMG TEH REI!!! is probrably true (and even the bad things, admittedly). And yes, in a moment in the series, she had the biggest rack in the world. She’s probrably one of the few anime ladies you’d shit bricks upon seeing her smile, purely because the occurence of that is as rare as catching a Mewtwo wild in Pokemon Pearl/Diamond. The Blue Haired-Red-Eyed T-t-thunder will strike the hearts of slumbering Evangelion fans once again. RALLY OUR FORCES.

Forced? Why does it have to be Forced? An Evangelion units costs as much as fifty Bill Gates put together in Voltron form, and taxpayers of the world paid for it, (We paid for at least eight units by the way). Excuse me, but even if an Eva unit gets dropped next to a Sun about to explode, I don’t give a shit. Retrieve it.
“BLASTING BOLT”
Clearly another Pokemon Reference, Pokemon company and Gainax must have entered into a Demonic contract or something. I just pray to Haruhi that I won’t be hearing Misato shouting “Shinji use BLASTING BOLT on Shamshel!” over the intercom anytime soon.
“Outline for OPERATION YASHIMA”
Sounds pretty important.
“SSDF Technological Research Headquarters’ Large-Scale Output Model 2nd Prototype Self-Propelled 460mm POSITRON CANNON”
Holy Christ on a Pogo stick. This must be referring to the Uber-sniper cannon which Shinji uses to knock out Ramiel (The Shielded pyramid angel and the Fifth angel). Lets check out the calibre, 460mm, thats really quite a ridiculous massive grade shell. It’s also a Positron Cannon, which to Physics Majors probrably means something more than just sounding awesome. What I do know about this Super-AWP (1 shot kill, you bet) is that you need the power of an entire city-grid for it to power up in one massive “IMMAH CHARGING MAH LAZORS” shot. I am very excited to see this baby get fired up once more, “Very Excited”.
“EVANGELION Solo Defense Equipment, ENCHANTED SHIELD OF VIRTUE”
J.R.R Tolkien? That you? The Shield is obviously referring to the Triangular-shaped Shield Rei carries to protect Shinji’s eva unit from the concentrated lazer beam Ramiel (mentioned above) shoots. However, I see that they have upgraded it now. It not only comes with more VIRTUE than ever before (maybe is the world’s most PATIENT shield) but it is also ENCHANTED. Guys, its Enchanted by something, I am hoping Rainbow Unicorn Magic, or at least Leprechaun Dust. Those piece of shit angels stand absolutely balls of a chance against Rei and her LEPRECHAUN-ENCHANTED shield, oh man, this is going to kick so much ass.
“G-TYPE EQUIPMENT for EVANGELION Sharp-Shooting”
The G-Type equipment is the natural successor of the A,B,C,D,E and F-type generation of equipment. In other words, I have absolutely no idea what the hell I am talking about.

The Level which you drag your nails across the Blackboard. You don’t need a high security clearance to access this level, just have to be near-deaf.

I’ll take your word for it. But if the FIRST FORTIFICATION is as useless as the 7.5% INTERCEPTION system or the 48.6% DEFENSE SYSTEM, then I’d rather have nothing to do with it.

1000,000 Volts of Ultra High Voltage is a lot of raw electrical energy. Now why would NERV need so much energy for? The answer is simple, they have to power a massive Pyramid structure that is NERV headquarters, they need to power the Eva units and of course the Penis-extension of a Super-Awp, the Large-Scale Output Model 2nd Prototype Self-Propelled 460mm POSITRON CANNON. Also, Transformers are obviously the components used to change DC to AC and so forth but c’mon, how cool would it be to have Autobots and Decepticons transform and roll out in the Evangelion world?

Pretty serious installation here. It doesn’t just conducts, it SUPERconducts. Some people have told me that it can outrun trains and save children from house fires. Truly Super.

Just one in many series of Biblical references in the series. Dead Sea Scrolls were found in a cave-like place in proximation to well, the Dead Sea. It is said to document events during the time of Jesus and his Apostles not evident in the current edition of the Bible. Biblical scholars study and interpret it to this day.
“LOVE & BONDS
DREAMS & HOPE
SOLITUDE & HAPPINESS”
Love and Bonds relates to the unconditional love Shinji secretly has for the people around him. Despite his Emo-fagtastic shit, he truly has some concern about the people around him, which leads him to make the final salving action causing the world to revert back to normalcy in the End of Evangelion. Bonds refer to the close ties he has with Rei, Asuka and Misato (the three women he is constantly mesmerized with during the Third Impact).
Dreams and Hope in Evangelion? This is new, If there were any, I am assuming they would have been crushed or worse upon the appearance of the Eva-05 mass production models and the intrusion of JSDF into the NERV Headquarters. They weren’t so much dreams, but there was an ongoing theme of Hope in the original series, NERV’s hope to preserve humanity and it’s fragile young pilots. Shinji’s tragic hope that he didn’t have to shoulder the bourden of the world and leading a normal high school boy’s life (explored in Episode 26 in the original series).
Solitude and Happiness reflects directly to the Three Pilots in the series. Shinji is already a given in this theme, Asuka suffers from sporadic happiness and then deep depression in the series (until her final bow out with over-elation in combat against the mass production series), this theme of Solitude and Happiness is explored heavily on Rei in the Manga (Rei fans choose the manga, after all). Solitude and Happiness, and it’s opportunity costs are all a running theme in the series and so its no surprise that this will serve to play a major role in the Evangelion.
MISATO: “I believe in EVA-01’s pilot, too”
When we first watched Shinji step into Eva 01 to prevent further injury to an already incapacitated Rei, we were glad he did the Man’s thing and replaced a brutallly injured girl, but laughed at the completely hopeless klutz that he was. However from the onset, I believe Misato saw something in Shinji, some part of that distant, emo and troubled boy that she could salvage. I think its in no doubt that his final decision in EoE was heavily influenced by our beloved Misato’s faith in him.

I’ll hope you pardon the larger intervals of entries within the blog, but there is a guarantee that I will definitely do an in-depth coverage of the First movie remake as soon as its subbed or whatever. Even if I am trapped in another dimension fighting Hollows or Rogue Ninjas, by hook or by crook, it shall be done. Also, here’s to sincerely hoping that by the time the Second movie comes out, the DEFENSE SYSTEM and INTERCEPTION SYSTEM are not failing as hard as they currently are. Battletoads.

Aww… the 3rd Angel was one of my favourites. ^^; Still, I am glad that Ramiel got so much attention in the poster. Ramiel being my top-favourite Angel, as he embodies everything I love in an “combat unit” (aka, the traits I would pick in the character creation screen).

Great analysis, I really like it. And because I’m a graduate physicist I just can’t resist:
The positron is the antimatter counterpart to the electron, which means that it has all the characteristics that an electron has except that it is positive charged (instead of negative as the electron is). The nice (and more interesting) part is, that at the time it comes in contact with an electron (basic component of all material) both parts annihilate each other, creating gamma ray emission in the process. So through hitting the angel with lots of positrons you basically disintegrate the material it consists of. Only drawback is that positrons (like electrons) don’t reach far in normal atmosphere, several meters at best. But maybe they use the Futurama method to transport their positrons:

In fact, each CRT TV/Monitor uses a electron cannon to create its picture, firing directly at you. No positrons, but still a bit alarming to know to be constantly shot at. Now I hope that they’ll make use of the dreadful neutrino-bomb in some movie someday.

- Considering the context, FOURTH ANGEL is probably referring to a renumbered Ramiel.
- EVA-01… “he”? You watched the show, right?
- The CORE UNIT is a big red ball in the Evas’ chests that the ventral end of the entry plug sticks into. (Ewwww.)
- Second Impact wasn’t _quite_ caused by an attempt to seal Adam. And First Impact has absolutely nothing to do with dinosaurs, despite what you may have read in places.
- “FORCED RECOVERY of [Eva] Unit”: This refers to when EVA-01 is brought back underground while Ramiel is attacking her with that giant ray-gun.
- “BLASTING BOLT”: In the original show, anyway, these seem to refer to explosive bolts used to “eject” the Evas’ limbs.
- “Depressed Center Car” is a real thing. Google it.
- “Sachiel”, no “t”. The “ch” is pronounced like a hard “k”, as well.
