Of all the shounen, h-game, remakes, or whatever other series to come out this season, I’m going to pick Pumpkin Scissors to be my cash camel. I will ride this sexy, sexy beast through the desert of shitty anime and into the oasis which I call, uh, quality anime. Yeah, that. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and am praying to whoever is able to hear me, that this series doesn’t bomb.

I find that my problem with new anime, is that I have trouble picking out which series will be qualified as good or not by watching the first episode. I tend to have rather “lenient” standards when it comes to anime, but I still believe the first episode is crutial.

When I watch anime, I usually keep three things in mind:

    1. Potential sexual relationships or friendly relationships between characters
    2. Characters who are hardcore, badass, or slick in some way or another
    3. Plot

Pumpkin Scissors covers all three of these, and a little more. I can say that I’m happy with the first episode and anxious as to what awaits us in the future.

Although right now it may not seem obvious in the series, I have reason to believe we’re going to see a little bit of sexual tension between these two further down the road. Either that, or they’ll end up being extremely trusting of one another, and show a uber strong bond of friendship. I don’t really mind which path they take, as long as they have a strong relationship. This right here is the first time they’ve touched, and Alice gets jumpy and springs out from his grasp. Sexual tension, anyone?

Alice, to me, could pass as Chidori’s(Full Metal Panic) sister or close relative. Their personalities are noticeably similar, yet still manage to maintain their own uniqueness. Alice has a tough outer shell, but she seems super sensitive to anything related to a sexual encounter (shown by her reaction in the pic above). She’s also extremely confident in the way she moves, talks, and acts which tells me she has no regrets, and that’s super sexy. Her fits of paladin-esque moments, where she reverts into a medieval cavalry commander or something, are so outrageous I can’t help but be embarassed for her, because she damn well isn’t embarassed. And most importantly, she’s reliable (which is hard to say about most anime characters), and that pleases me on a whole nother level (no, I’m not talking about fapping).

Orlando, Orland, whatever his name is it doesn’t matter because I’m calling him Panda-kun from now on. Panda-kun is awesome. He’s like this huge stuffed animal with these sad/knowing eyes (not in the pic above obviously) and he loves his greens, but he can also be dangerous! I can’t imagine him actually hurting anyone when he’s not in his “badass” state, and that says a lot considering how scary he becomes. I’m not exactly sure the meaning of his “lantern” that emanates a blue glow when he flips it on, but I do know he casts blood lust on himself (which is impossible, btw) and kicks major ass. We find out that he’s from an Anti Tank division, but that’s about all we know about fluffy Panda-kun. Oh yeah, he’s fucking huge too. It makes me wanna just run up and hug him like a little kid hugging Mickey Mouse at Disneyland for the very first time.

    Plot:

As for plot, it’s set up so that they can milk a good storyline out of it. The setting takes place 3 years after some nasty chemical warfare(no name has been given yet). The government did a horrible job regulating everything, and the enemy broke off into small groups of bandits. Obviously the government has a very loose handle on what happens, and the bandits pretty much run the show. It seems a relief unit was formed, called Pumpkin Scissors, and they’re working hard to bring justice to the world. That, of course, is where we come in.

    Other:

The episode overall was exciting. I’m diggin’ the real life type action, as opposed to flying/jumping/bouncing around and shit which seems to be a big trend. The artwork wasn’t mindblowing, but I can’t say I had any problems with the action scenes or the way characters are drawn. The music didn’t stand out, so perhaps it’s a little lacking, but there hasn’t been many moments to let it shine yet. The OP was decent, and reminded me a little bit of Black Lagoon, and the ED was pretty upbeat and lively.

I think I’ve decided to take this anime under my wing, and hope it’ll mature into the beautiful swan I know it can be. Okay, enough with the metaphors.

    1. I have a really bad tendency to judge shows by their first episode, and since my standards are quite low, I usually end up watching heaps of shows and half of them end up crap.

Anyway, as for Pumpkin Scissors, I have to say I did not want to watch the show solely because of the name. I seriously thought it was some 70’s kids anime or something lol. But of course, now that I have, I think it’s quite something.

    2. Holy shit, were you waiting for this entry to pop up or something? I posted it like 2 seconds ago.

And yes, I TOTALLY agree with you, in everything you just said. I also watch heaps of shit because of my low standards and the name of this series turned me off big time. Lets just say I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed it.

    3. I’m leaning towards liking this show, but I’m going to watch a few more episodes before really deciding it. it looks like it has potential to be a good one.

    4. Alice looks hot, and if she is anything like Chidori…I just know I will like her as a character. :P Setting looks pretty cool too, I love the stark post-war atmospheres.

Awesome, now that you have decided to take this anime under your wing, I will eagerly await your future entries.

      Also, needs moar PANDA-KUN!

    5. @badger: I always try to give a series a two episode test. This is one reason why I had such a hard time choosing an anime to blog. I’m sure if you liked the first, you’ll prob like the second episode, but I can’t really promise that ;p

@darkshaunz: Lol, indeed PANDA-KUN!  But yeah seriously, we need more. I didn’t show all his action shots, but he’s hardcore man. He takes out a fuckin tank by himself with just a pistol that shoots something that looks like an elephant bullet(only 1 at a time too..keep in mind Panda-kun is HUGE and that bullet is that big). Seeing as you have a nice weapons background, you might be able to figure it out.

    6. Sexual tension, anyone? >
haha, yes, she’s definitely in that arena

Definitely needing some more episodes to see where this winds up.
