  • Pumpkin Scissors - 06 - Babysitting Bites

It really seems now that the Pumpkin Scissors crew are having a hard time finding a way to “save the world.” I had really expected more action and more mini-bosses, but lately we’ve been shown more of the non-violent side of the war. I guess thats a good thing, but usually it doesn’t translate well for viewers who wait a week to watch a 24 minute show. I didn’t really mind this episode and actually kind of enjoyed the fresh outlook on all the characters. Just as good as last episode, maybe better because of the message it got across (but still undeniably a filler).

So, we learn this episode that babysitting is no laughing matter. Apparently nobody knows a damn thing about taking care of kids or are willing to give up easy when faced with hardships. I guess that’s to be expected since it isn’t their kid nor are they required to take care of it. Panda was the only one who stepped up to the challenge, even though he’s the new recruit, and started taking care of the kid. I don’t know if thats because of his soft-hearted nature, or if he feels obligated to do so since he found the baby, but it shows some responsibility on his part. Once again, he can be trusted.

Even though this episode was pretty much about nothing at all, we really got to see some of the characters shine in a more normal environment. For example, we get to see just how naive Alice is, not only in her actions but in her knowledge of the world around her. Growing up spoiled indeed spoiled her, even though she’s trying to make a difference. She has no common sense when it comes to sensitive situations (which can be good sometimes), and she also doesn’t understand the plight of the commoner. We see that the baby, using whatever jedi abilities it has, realized that Panda is a good man. I’m guessing only Oreld really knows what happens in the outside world, and it shows this episode. Everyone else seems to be a little spoiled by the high standard of living in the army base, and they don’t even realize it.

I liked the message they got across, showing us that even if it may be hard to raise a child, you should raise it to the best of your abilities. I’m not saying that I don’t support abortion, and agree it’s the best choice in some cases, but in this case it wasn’t a good choice. The mother was the most suitable person to raise the child, and should have done so. On the flip side, we also realize that sometimes life isn’t fair. The mother is going to have to raise this child in a shitty environment and can do nothing by try her best. Life sucks sometimes, but I’m sure something good will come out of her situation.

This definitely felt like a filler episode. Last episode I could understand because Panda was still healing, but this episode there was no excuse. It was good they finally got a wake-up call and realized that they have a lot of work to do before they save anyone, but it was kind of boring. There were some funny parts like Alice’s “blblblbl,” Oreld being peed on, and secretary girl getting uber hyper, but beyond that not much else. I’m assuming they wanted us to see P.S. III interact with the real world, so I’ll let this episode slide under the radar. Next episode, though, looks like more filler-esque stuff. I may be a little harsher next time around.

    1. Nice coverage as usual Rets. I agree, if the pace and slack is not picked up in 2 episodes or so, then the “harsher” grading scale should be brought in (dun dun dunn!). However, I would also like to say how much I enjoyed Pandakun bursting in the door and shouting for Alice’s boobies. That was adorable, and proves that Pandakun is a healthy young man (muahaha).

I loved the caption “mama and papa” foreshadowing…perhaps. I mean even in the OP we are hinted to a strong relationship going to develop between the two. But its rare in anime for the couple to marry and have children (to that extent). Perhaps what we will see is a Sagara/Chidori-esque couple relationsip for the two?

In all seriousness though, I want Pumpsis to start sticking it to the man (or men). They need to start doing some bigger scale stuff going down a notch. Section III is all about kicking ass and saving the world, I dont mind a bit of downtime, but not too much.

    2. Y’know, the entire episode I was waiting for the baby to transform into a tank.

Definitely not an episode to convince people that Pumpkin Scissors is what you want to be watching.. and just when I thought they had started their season “mystery” as well :/

    3. Darkshaunz: definitely need more action! Panda x Alice really have got nothing on Sagara x Chidori, but hopefully they develop some sort of romance. That’d be nice.

Crayotic: Yeah. It’s not turning out to be a series that I recommend to friends or even anyone really. I still think it’s better than some of the other stuff that I watch so there’s no need for me to abandon it. I was mostly trying to pull what good things I could from this episode and glorify it for this entry. Wasn’t a great addition to the plot, but its not like I hated this episode either.

    4. Oops, now how did I completely miss this post? I must have seen it but at the time hadn’t watched the sixth ep so I skipped it.

If this show stays at it is, I’m going to lose all interest soon. Let’s hope you’re right, Retsgip, in saying that this is a filler. But does that mean the anime is going to fast to fit all the manga in its allocated episode count? I hope this doesn’t go on for more than 26 episodes. I don’t think it would be able to pull something like that off.
