  • Asatte no Houkou - 05 - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

I’m still amazed by this anime! I love the consistency in how they present their material, as well as the pacing of the plot. Nothing seems to be rushed and it feels almost as if things will just fall into place. This makes for a smooth, relaxing viewing experience, which can’t be found anywhere else this season (that I know of at least).

Okay, Shouko pwned me this episode. There were tons of cute scenes (not like pedo cute, but like young cute) with her acting a lot like a kid, and less like an adult. I thought it was INSANELY cute the way Shouko tricked the girl into looking at something so she could step on her shadow. It just goes to show that she wasn’t being honest with herself, and she really does have a girl inside that tough exterior. I’m amazed that even with her troubling past, she was still able to ‘break free’ and conquer her memories by joining in on the playground fun. We get the feeling that this is the first time she’s actually played, ever, and it brings a smile to my face wondering how she got all her dirt marks. Ah, being a kid was so much fun. The littlest things cause the greatest amusement, and nothing ever seems too important.

It seems that Karada and Hiro may end up together after all, if anything can be found from some subtle clues this episode. We see Hiro back away from Karada when she tries to pick lint from his shirt. Could he have been scared of her hugging or kissing him goodbye, and what affects that might have on his wang? I already assume that he’s checking her out, especially when they show him peeking from the corner of his eye to watch her do stuff. I guess I can’t blame him, because she is sexilicious. Also, when Shouko was out playing, both Hiro and Karada worried about her and went looking for her. This is a classic textbook scene from any movie that involve a family and a possible runaway kid. Even the scene where they finally find Shouko reminded me of a family reuniting after a potentially scary event.

A possible ending that I can see, which is also a happy ending: Karada stays big and marries/dates Hiro, and Shouko may be adopted by them to live the childhood life she never had. Obviously she had big problems with her childhood, and this is her chance to make it up to herself. Karada is starting to take more responsibility around the house, and is kind of acting like a stay-home mother. Having responsibility and being useful seemed to be what she was trying to accomplish by becoming “bigger.”

In any case, yet another great episode. I’m more of an actiony guy so these episodes don’t get the rating/credit they deserve, nor can I properly examine them. I do however, know that this series pwns (you know, kinda like me back in my CS days ;p), and it seems like a few more people around the blogging community are noticing this as well.

Please use <spoiler></spoiler> tags when appropriate, thanks!

    1. You forgot Tetsu in your possible ending :-P
He’s gotta have a bigger role than just being there. His lust for the young Karada may or may not pass onto the older version, and I would like to see some conflict between him and maybe Hiro. Not directly though. I don’t think either of them would admit to each other that they want Karada.

    2. ohhhhhh Tetsu yeah yeah. I’m thinking that him being there is just a source of drama. Him and Hiro will probably clash in some epic battle to win Karada over, but who’s to say which one Karada will choose. She expressed feelings for Tetsu this episode, but when she finds out about Hiro not being blood related he’s fair game(kinda??). Maybe Hiro will be happy taking care of Shouko as a big brother? Fuck I dunno, damnit you made me doubt my theory!

    3. If its not Tokimeki I have to add to my shopping list, its this anime. Thanks Rets, thanks to you, I now have yet ANOTHER to add to my “To Buy” List. Maybe I should send some of the bill to you >=). Seeing as you continuously grade this anime high and hold it in high regard, I obviously want to see it in action myself.

The whole body switching experience has piqued my interest though, there hasn’t been something done on that scale ever since the manga Gacha Gacha (but that was never translated into an anime). I hope the series continues to deliver for you.

Im serious about billing you though.

    4. Correct.

Asatte no Houkou >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kanon. Thank you for agreeing with me.

    5. Best thing about Asatte no Houkou for me is that I don’t feel like I’m watching a fake anime. A LOT of the animes this season are just too damn fake (for lack of a better word). Asatte no Houkou is a breath of fresh air that I feel is sorely needed every week. Without it, I’d probably drown amongst all the crap and never return.

    6. Death Note’s fake. Do you like Death Note? I usually have no problem with ‘fake’ unless it directly influences characters’ personalities, thus also influencing their actions. But pf course, there are shows where it is natural to have ‘fake’ characteristics and such (like harem, shounen etc). But then there’s ‘fake’ when it’s not meant to be ‘fake’, and that’s where it becomes bad.

    7. I meant it more metaphorically i guess. Like saying a supermodel is fake. Most of the anime this season is fake. I don’t mind sci fi or fantasy settings and outrageous things happening. I just don’t like things that are…well…fake? BLAH I’m sorry I can’t explain it any better than that.

    8. I think I can help you with that. It’s ingenuous and totally honest as it is unaffected. It does not posit ridiculous implausibilities (aside from the body switching which is why there is the story in the first place). A body switch is much more plausible than having five girls with large eyes (who many think to be cute) fawn over someone as depraved and dissolute (I guess as harem leads go) as Kyon’ichi (or whatever his real name was). AnH is a series that portrays an improbable reality so exquisitely, so beautifully that one can’t helped but be sucked into its vacuum of aesthetic excellence.

    9. Michael puts it very nicely! For some reason, I feel they will return to normal in the end. Also, I don’t know if Karada has “that” idea of Hiro, she really likes Tetsu. As for being non-fake, this is true, its like comparing real chocolate with skittles. Both are sweet, but one is more satisfing and doesn’t take like it came out of a lab ;) yo

    10. Yeah, the fact that Karada only sees Hiro as a big brother will probably foil my prediction. You never know what might happen up until then. What if he kisses her after telling her they’re not related? Kisses do weird things to anime character. Karada would then end up trapped in the middle of some Hiro vs. Tetsu drama and Shouko would be on the side, ignored as it seems she has been her whole life.

What I really want, is a happy ending for Shouko. I don’t really care what happens to the other characters as long as Shouko ends up happy.

    11. “I don’t really care what happens to the other characters as long as Shouko ends up happy.”

I don’t care much about the other characters either, at least compared to Shouko, so as long as her story and character development remain interesting I guess I will be satisifed by this series. That said, if there is no Hiro-Karada romantic affair in the anime that would be much appreciated by me. Not because she thinks he is her brother but because she is essentially a child in the body of an adult. If she remains in that body for several more years or returns to hers and matures in a normal fashion, I don’t think I would mind their relationship, apart from wondering why would Hiro be so stupid to reject Shouko in order to have Karada. ;)
